Bangkok Nightlife – The Best in the World?

August 30, 2026

A few weeks ago, we learned that Koh Samui had been named the “world’s best island” by Travel + Leisure. Now, Thailand’s capital has received a similar accolade. Bangkok has taken the top spot in Time Out’s ranking of the world’s best nightlife destinations for 2026. Just as with Koh Samui’s award, the label “world’s best” should probably be taken with a pinch of salt, but there is no denying that Thailand is a tourist country that both delights and delivers.

Bangkok Tops the List of 150 Cities

Time Out asked around 24,000 locals in 150 cities about the nightlife where they live. More than a hundred of the magazine’s editors and local writers also took part. The ranking is therefore based on assessments from both local residents and Time Out’s writers. Among other things, they considered value for money, opportunities to meet people, and how lively, diverse, welcoming and safe each city feels after dark.

Bangkok received very high marks. 73 percent of the Bangkok residents surveyed described the city’s nightlife as good or amazing. Time Out’s panel was even more positive, with a full 95 percent giving it a positive rating. Time Out highlights Bangkok’s huge variety, ranging from cocktail bars, nightclubs and rooftop bars to night markets and easily accessible street food into the early hours.

The ten highest-ranked cities were:

Rank City Country
1 Bangkok Thailand
2 Berlin Germany
3 New York USA
4 Melbourne Australia
5 São Paulo Brazil
6 Medellín Colombia
7 Johannesburg South Africa
8 Brighton United Kingdom
9 Beijing China
10 Amsterdam Netherlands

Is Bangkok Really Home to the World’s Best Nightlife?

How do you really compare the nightlife in Bangkok with that of Berlin or New York? There is, of course, no objective answer to the question of which metropolis offers the best night-time entertainment, but personally, I find these kinds of rankings rather entertaining. I can simply note that I can reach the world’s best nightlife in just over an hour from Samui Airport – but why would I leave the “world’s best island” in the first place?!

Next year, perhaps another city will be given this accolade. Until then – party hats on!
