Why Are There So Many 7-Eleven Stores in Thailand?
August 27, 2026When visiting Thailand, it is almost impossible to miss the distinctive red, green and orange 7-Eleven logo. Just outside the automatic doors, one or more dogs can often be found enjoying the air conditioning while waiting for generous customers. The bravest four-legged visitors may even venture inside the store itself. 7-Eleven stores are everywhere in Thailand: in major cities and small towns, at tourist destinations and along the country's roads. In some places, you can even see two or more stores within sight of each other. I remember one stretch of Koh Samui's ring road where you could see five or six 7-Eleven stores at the same time.
It all began in 1988, when the Thai company CP All was granted exclusive rights to operate 7-Eleven in Thailand. The first store opened the following year in Patpong in Bangkok, and the chain has expanded rapidly ever since. At the end of 2024, there were 15,245 7-Eleven stores in the country. During that year, CP All opened another 700 stores.
The Thai 7-Eleven concept is not simply a copy of the American one. Over the decades, CP All has developed the business specifically for the Thai market. This has been achieved through a combination of company-owned stores, efficient franchising, distribution and food production.
Close to Where People Are
One of the chain's greatest strengths is the location of its stores. 7-Eleven is found not only in shopping malls and on major shopping streets, but also near residential areas, offices, schools and petrol stations. In other words, they are located where people spend time and go about their daily lives. However, 7-Eleven stores located at petrol stations do not sell alcohol.
CP All has continued to adapt its stores to different locations. In 2024, around 80 percent of new stores were larger, with a wider range of products and more parking space. Many of the 7-Eleven stores being built today have parking for at least ten cars.
Food Is a Major Part of the Business
Food and beverages play a very important role in the business. In 2024, these categories accounted for around 76 percent of sales. The range includes fresh food, ready-made meals, drinks and snacks.
The selection is not the same as in European or American 7-Eleven stores. Instead, it is developed around Thai eating habits and consumer demand, giving it a distinctly local character. Prices are somewhat higher than in supermarkets, for example, but still reasonable enough that many people choose to buy a large part of their groceries there.

More Than Just a Store
Today, 7-Eleven's business extends far beyond selling products. Customers can use various services to pay bills and make other types of payments. The chain has also expanded its digital services, including ordering, home delivery and online shopping.
An Enormous Distribution Network
Behind the thousands of stores is a large organisation. CP All has built an extensive distribution network and its own systems for areas such as food production and refrigerated transportation. This makes it possible to supply stores across the country with a relatively consistent range of products.
Franchising has helped drive the expansion. At the end of 2024, CP All operated 7,743 stores itself, while 7,502 were operated through various forms of partnerships and franchising. The entire network, in turn, helps strengthen the brand and create everyday shopping habits among customers.
Why Is the Concept So Successful?
Several factors have contributed to its success, including an early entry into the market, exclusive rights, rapid expansion and an extensive distribution network. Just as importantly, CP All has understood the importance of adapting the business to the Thai market.
For many visitors and residents in Thailand, 7-Eleven has therefore become more than just an international convenience store chain. It is part of everyday life, whether you need breakfast on your way to work, a cold drink in the afternoon or something you suddenly realise you have run out of at home.
